The OSF Saint Katharine Foot and Ankle Residency Program had a strong presence at this year’s American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) national conference, held in Dallas, where five posters were presented by our residents. One poster, a collaborative effort by current residents Dr. Dhruv Patel and Dr. Roshni Patel, and program graduate Dr. Beth Richardson, earned second place!
Each year, podiatry residents across the country submit poster abstracts to APMA in February. From hundreds of submissions, a select group is invited to present at the conference. Posters are judged on visual design, impact, and the significance of the research to the advancement of podiatric medicine.
Dr. Dhruv Patel, a third-year resident, offered insight into the team’s research. “Our research focused on a rare case of septic arthritis caused by a bacterium frequently associated with colorectal cancer. Given the limited literature on this topic, we felt it was important to explore this connection further and share our findings with the wider medical community. Our study detailed the patient’s clinical presentation and outlined the treatment approach. This case is particularly significant as colorectal cancer remains the third most common malignancy worldwide, underscoring the importance of heightened clinical awareness.”
Reflecting on the experience, he added, “Attending the conference was an incredible experience. I had the opportunity to collaborate with residents and students from across the country and learn from leading foot and ankle specialists nationwide. It was especially meaningful to spend time with my co-residents and the attendings from our OSF Saint Katharine Foot and Ankle Residency Program. I’m truly honored that our work received recognition at the national level.”
This achievement not only highlights the academic strength of the OSF Saint Katharine residency program but also reinforces its commitment to advancing the field of podiatric medicine through research, collaboration and clinical excellence.
